Our rigorous and relevant Middle School curriculum positions students for success in higher education and today’s technology-rich global economy. Teaching teams work to provide an active and challenging learning environment. They celebrate the strengths of each student and work closely to help each reach maximum potential. Small group instruction within the classroom meets student needs with a more personal approach to learning.
Students build on their foundation of reading, writing, language and communication skills with an emphasis on the writing process. Our literature curriculum eases the transition from elementary levels and prepares students for high school work. Speech class and abundant public speaking opportunities develop communication skills.
Math groups allow students to get extra help or move more rapidly through material. Algebra 1 is offered for qualifying grade 8 students. Those who are ready for Algebra 1 in grade 7 are able to take Geomety at Columbus Catholic High School or public school during their 8th grade year at St. Patrick.
Cross-curricular projects are a highlight of the middle school grades. Students work collaboratively, applying 21st century skills to solve problems and present their work. A wide variety of field trips enhances curriculum in the Middle School grades.
Students solve problems and think critically through coding, A World in Motion, and other STEM projects. In the science lab, students discover life, physical, and earth sciences through experiments, activities, and research.
Social studies covers the geography and history of the United States. Students take an active roll in their learning, showing they have grasped concepts through roll play, hands-on actvities, collaborative projects, and use of technology for presentations. Junior Achievement builds upon classroom learning. National History Day competition in Grades 7/8 allows students to choose a topic for in-depth discovery.
All students continue with "special" subjects of Spanish, music, art, physical education, health, and guidance. Techology is used to enhance learning in all subjects. Band is an option for students beginning in grade five.
With a focus on faith, values, and leadership skills in addition to academic excellence, we truly educate the whole child. Students set goals for academic and personal growth and present their progress to parents at student-led conferences in the fall and spring.
Students in grades 5-8 may participate in our Athletics program. Our early offering of school sports provides for physical activity after school and the development of teamwork and athletic skills.
