Studies show that exposure to fine arts is linked to higher academic performance and creative abilities. Fine arts are an important component of the St. Patrick curriculum.
The goal of St Patrick School’s art program is to teach every child how to express himself through art. As a result, students learn to see and experience the world in a different way. Our program helps students understand the relationships between culture and history of art. Students use a variety of techniques and media throughout the year and participate in our annual Fine Arts and Leadership Showcase in the spring.
Music
Our K-8 music curriculum is based on learning the basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form, expressive qualities, and notation. Activities are created which align with the national music standards of singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing, reading and notating music, understanding and applying criteria, and understanding relationships between music, history, and culture.
Annual special events include our music programs. Kindergarten and grades 1 and 2 prepare songs and poems to share with families in December. Music and theater come together in subsequent grades as all students are involved in annual musical productions. Grades 3/4 perform a musical centering on the birth of Christ. Students in grades 5/6 and 7/8 prepare for musicals held in the spring. As a service to the nursing homes in our area, students prepare programs to share with residents at various times during the year.
Band is available for students in grades 5-8. Beginning group band practice for 5th graders is Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. Large group practice for grades 6-8 is Tuesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. Each member participates in group practice and in a weekly smaller group lesson during the school day. Students look forward to two performances every year: a Christmas concert and an end-of-the-year performance. Jazz and Praise Bands provide enrichment for students who desire additional opportunities to participate.
