Science

For Kindergarten through Grade 6 St. Patrick School utilizes the Full Option Science Systems which is a hands on science program. The units students study are as follows:

Kindergarten Animals; Trees; Fabrics - texture, and Wood -observation of characteristics
Grade 1 Insects; Plants; Balance and Motion; Introduction to Human Body
Grade 2 Solids and Liquids; Air and Weather; Pebbles, Sand and Silt; Introduction to the Solar System
Grade 3 and 4
(2 year cycled curriculum)
Structures of Life; Measurement; Physics of Sound; Water; Earth Materials; Magnetism and Electricity; Human Body - bones; Solar System
Grade 5 and 6 Food and Nutrition; Mixtures and Solutions; Levers and Pulleys; Variables; Earth Materials; Models and Designs; Environments; Landforms
Grade 7 and 8 St. Patrick students utilize Science Explorer textbooks, A World in Motion program, and Jason Project units. The units students study are as follows:

Animals; Chemical Building Blocks; Cells and Heredity; From Bacteria to Plants; Planetary Science; Gliders; Motorized Vehicles; Disappearing Wetlands

Our program focuses on science inquiry, hands-on learning, cooperative group work, measurement tools, and reflective journaling. Technology is integrated throughout the year in activities that involve research, data organization, word processing and culminating projects. Assessments given to students include projects, portfolios, formal tests, observation, and participation.

The benchmarks and standards have been correlated with the objectives for each unit. When a students leaves St. Patrick school they will have been exposed to all the district science benchmarks for Kindergarten through Grade 8.
