Music | The K-8 St. Patrick Catholic School music curriculum is based on learning the basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form, expressive qualities, and notation. Activities are created which align with the national music standards of singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing, reading and notating music, understanding and applying criteria, and understanding relationships between music, history, and culture. Students in the lower grades are presented with very basic information which we build upon as they learn more complex skills and concepts each year. Formal quizzes covering these concepts are given to students in Units B, C, and D and the scores are used to help determine a student's progress in music class. Other special events that occur each year are our music programs. Kindergarten and Unit A prepare songs and poems to share with families in December, while Unit B gets their first chance to be involved in a Christmas musical that centers around the birth of Christ. In the months of April and May, both Unit C and Unit D students put on separate spring musicals where they get a chance to showcase their many talents. Service projects are also a valuable learning experience for St. Patrick students. One of our favorite activities is the Jingle and Mingle event held each December where our Unit C students go caroling and spread the Christmas spirit to downtown shoppers. As a service to the nursing homes in our area, each unit also prepares a half hour program of songs and poems to share with the residents of these homes at various times throughout the year.
